Going away to college is going to be one of the most fun times of your life. The only downside is that if your parents cut you off financially, it’s also going to be one of the most expensive. There is no better time to start learning how to save money and live on a budget, than when you live on your own for the first time. Let’s take a look at the best ways to decorate your dorm room on a budget, leaving you with a great place to study, hang out and have friends over.

Posters
If your parents never let you put poster on your walls as a kid, than your going to love doing this in college. Not only can you express yourself by putting posters up, you will be saving money because they are cheap and cover a lot of wall space too. You don’t have to frame them, but instead just throw some tacks in them and your set.

Photo Collages
For more personal wall-art, consider making photo collages of your friends and family back home. You can add to the collage as you do more great things in college and make new friends. You can use corkboard to post the pictures, or you can simply tape them all to the wall and your set.

Be Crafty
Aside from making collages, create other crafty items. You can search online how to make neat decorations out of paper or other cheap items that you probably already have lying around. Furthermore, the more artsy you get, the more conversational pieces you’ll have to talk about whenever friends come over to hang out in your room.

Hand Me Downs and Used Items
Don’t be embarrassed to have used items or hand me downs in your dorm room. After all, chances are that this isn’t you’re your dream living situation, and sometimes you can make a really nice living space with other peoples used goods. You never know what nice things people would throw away because it simply didn’t match their living space anymore. Check out thrift stores as well, as this is always a treasure hunt waiting to be explored.

Whiteboards
Whiteboards are perfect for school assignments, as well as for leaving messages for dorm mates. The reason they are so good is because they are erasable, so you can simply erase whatever is on them and rewrite whatever it is you need to be have noted. Look for used whiteboards online or at thrift stores for saving money, as people always seem to be tossing these out.

Be Aware of Your Space
Remember that you only have so much room to work with in your dorm room. And whatever room it appears you have, cut that in half since you’ll be living with someone else. You don’t need much to fill the space and have all the essentials. Before you spend money on extravagant things, it’s also good to keep in mind that you’ll be moving after the school year and having less is always better when moving from place to place.

You’re going to have a great time in college! But you can have an even better time with an organized, creative and inviting room. Consider the money saving tips on this list to have a great looking room, without spending a bunch of money.
